Description
“A sparkling bookish story about rules just begging to be broken.” ― Abby Jimenez, New York Times bestselling author of Part of Your World and The Friend Zone I, Maggie Banks, solemnly swear to uphold the rules of Cobblestone Books. If only, I, Maggie Banks, believed in following the rules. When Maggie Banks arrives in Bell River to run her best friend’s struggling bookstore, she expects to sell bestsellers to her small-town clientele. But running a bookstore in a town with a famously bookish history isn’t easy. Bell River’s literary society insists on keeping the bookstore stuck in the past, and Maggie is banned from selling anything written this century. So, when a series of mishaps suddenly tip the bookstore toward ruin, Maggie will have to get creative to keep the shop afloat. And in Maggie’s world, book rules are made to be broken. To help save the store, Maggie starts an underground book club, running a series of events celebrating the books readers actually love. But keeping the club quiet, selling forbidden books, and dodging the literary society is nearly impossible. Especially when Maggie unearths a town secret that could upend everything. Maggie will have to decide what’s more important: the books that formed a small town’s history, or the stories poised to change it all.

I bought this book after only reading about it the day it was released. I wasn’t sure how I would like it since it is out of the normal for the genres I typically read. I devoured this book! I won’t lie, this does start out a little slow with the background and the build-up, but once this gets going man it was hard to put down! There is a part that I literally laughed out loud at and then screenshot to all my book friends that are reading with me. The characters in this just get to you, and you become invested in getting to know them, Vernon stole my heart by the end of this story. The grumpy old man that appears to hate everyone eventually befriending Maggie, just makes me smile. Maggie is super relatable for me as I was not a huge reader until this year. Hearing others rave about books they have read and how they love the characters and the storylines really drew me in., The events she puts together are amazing. If there was something like this in real life I would be there front and center. The little twists the authors that participate in these events put on the classic novels are amazing. I love seeing Maggie and Malcolm come together in the awkward shy way that they do, it’s just cute and makes my soul smile., Well done Shauna Robinson. This was a very pleasant surprise for me.

This gem of a novel humorously explores the various types of book lovers through the characters. From the literary purists who limit themselves to only “the classics” to the free spirits who are willing to try any new genre and everyone in between — all are represented in the colorful quirks of the inhabitants of this book., The plot is wonderfully presented as a war between the powerful, narrow-minded purist and an inexperienced, but creative, bookshop manager. The whole town gets involved in the schemes of Maggie the manager to the delight of the reader. This is a warm, wonderful valentine to book lovers everywhere.

Shauna Robinson totally stole my heart with this one! The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks is one of my top five favorite reads to date. When I can see myself as a character, I love it, and there were many times I connected with Maggie. I could feel her struggles and I was rooting for her every step of the way. I loved the bookish feel and the found family trope. The friendships really warmed my heart, and the book club had me wanting to sign up immediately. Plus, the natural hair, loc representation, and Black love were everything. I give this book all the stars. Such a cute read, I could gush more but I’ll end with do yourself a favor, read this book!
