Description

“Skillfully researched and powerfully written, The German Wife will capture you from the first page.” —Madeline Martin, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Bookshop in London The New York Times bestselling author of The Warsaw Orphan returns with a gripping novel inspired by the true story of Operation Paperclip: a controversial secret US intelligence program that employed former Nazis after WWII. Berlin, 1930 —When a wave of change sweeps a radical political party to power, Sofie von Meyer Rhodes’s academic husband benefits from the ambitions of its newly elected chancellor. Although Sofie and Jürgen do not share the social views growing popular in Hitler’s Germany, Jürgen’s position with its burgeoning rocket program changes their diminishing fortunes for the better. But as Sofie watches helplessly, her beloved Berlin begins to transform, forcing her to consider what they must sacrifice morally for their young family’s security, and what the price for their neutrality will be. Twenty years later, Jürgen is one of the many German scientists offered pardons for their part in the war, and taken to America to work for its fledgling space program. For Sofie, this is the chance to exorcise the ghosts that have followed her across the ocean, and make a fresh start in her adopted country. But her neighbors aren’t as welcoming or as understanding as she had hoped. When scandalous rumors about the Rhodes family’s affiliation with Hitler’s regime spreads, idle gossip turns to bitter rage, and the act of violence that results will tear apart Sofie’s community and her family before the truth is finally revealed. “ An unforgettable novel that explores important questions highly relevant to the world today.” — Christine Wells, author of Sisters of the Resistance Don’t miss Kelly Rimmer’s next historical suspense, The Paris Agent, coming July 2023! The German Wife told of what it was like in Germany before and during WWII. It is the first book I have read about what the German citizens lived through. And what the scientists and their wivees and children endured when they were brought to America to work on our Space program., I would recommend this book to all who have wondered about WWII from the German point of view.

I’ve read many books on the Holocaust. However, Sophie’s experience as a German citizen, who detested Hitler and the Nazi ideology, interested me a great deal. She and her husband eventually found themselves in a situation that threatened their lives and the lives of their children. The book became a real page turner for me. Terrible things were happening and they had to make choices. The question that kept coming to mind was, “what would I have done given the choices they had?”, The book follows the lives of two women, one American and one German. I found Lizzie’s (American) story interesting; dust bowl, Great Depression, losing the farm and her parents. But her character served me best by showing the strong emotions Americans had against Germans for years after the war ended.

Although fiction, I am impressed by the historical accuracy of this novel. I learned that it’s because the author based her writing on actual events., I also liked how it was narrated -so well, that I could easily imagine the story as it progress. The characters were also balanced and can be emphatized with. Each has their own depth., Overall, I enjoyed the book. As always, 5 stars are for books that I am willing to reread. So this book gets that.

The book was a bit confusing at first as the characters unfolded b, . But once I realized that there was to be a connection between several disparate characters, I could not put This book down,

Generally, this is an interesting read, although there are several historical errors that are glaring to me since I lived through much of that time in those same places. The average reader will not notice those things, though; yet, for the sense of accuracy, correctness would be nice. There are numerous events that bring back memories, many of them not so nice. It is true that there are always two sides to every issue, and, therefore, one should not judge others based only on one’s own very limited experiences.
