Description

“Is this okay, is this okay, is this okay or does it make me weak?” Full of the snap and bite of young adulthood, comes the Goodreads Award winning second collection of poetry from bestselling author Trista Mateer. The Dogs I Have Kissed is an ode to intimacy issues and the messy emotions of youth, both what it’s like to kiss the wrong people and to just be the wrong person.

I feel really conflicted about this book. On the one hand, I’ve wanted to read it since around the time it came out, and I enjoyed a lot of it. But, on the other hand, I felt like it got repetitive and started losing my interest after a while. I remember buying it after reading the Kindle sample and liking what I read, and I added bookmarks to quite a few of the poems because I related to something about them. But, overall, I just didn’t connect to the majority of the poems or feel much about them. They weren’t bad, they just weren’t for me, and I honestly think it was me and not this book that was the reason I didn’t love it as much as I’d hoped to., This was good, and I’ll definitely revisit some of it in the future and I’ll probably continue to buy and read Trista Mateer’s books, because I like her style and there are some really great lines in this collection.

The name of this book seems innocuous enough; I know I thought, “aw, this will be light and cute.”, Somewhere Mateer cackled., The poems address relationships Mateer had and how she dealt with, and still deals with, them. Some of them are particularly painful because Mateer does not hold back. She goes through talking about some abusive relationships, not in detail, but some enough that you can go, “wow, I’m sad.” She details a suicidal friend and how she thought she could be her rock, lamenting the entire poem “I should have called your mom.” There are texts she regrets sending her exes., It’s not a lighthearted book. It’s a brutal look at how relationships can be and the aftermath of healing from them.

This collection is filled with poems about loving someone from afar and trying to forget someone. It is beautifully written., “I have written twenty-seven poems, about how it feels to be sad and still love you, at the same time”

Worthy of your time. There are some better poetry books out there but this one is great. It’s a great add to any collection.
